2011 NOGS Garden Tour

The tour formally known as the North of Gaston Street Tour has changed to the North of Gwinnett Street Tour to incorporate the southernmost streets of the National Historic District and their hidden gardens. The tour runs April 29 - 30, 2011 from 10am - 4pm daily. One of my close friends and her husband Teresa and Michael (aka Jake) Jacobson were chosen as a stop on this years tour. What an honor!

The walking tour includes eight walled gardens and the Owens-Thomas House English inspired par-terre garden. The gardens are selected each year for the excellence of design, historical interest and beauty. Hostesses at each garden will greet visitors and point out special plants, garden features and interesting historical facts. From 2 - 4pm daily ticket holders are invited to tour the historic Harper-Fowlkes House and enjoy a southern tea in its beautiful garden. There will also be entertainment and there is a promise of a surprise guest appearance. Wonder who?

If you can't make this year's tour, make your plans to attend next year. The 2012 date will be April 20 - 21. This is a wonderful experience and I'm sure if you're a garden lover like me you won't be disappointed.

2011 Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament

This past week the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf tournament was held here in Savannah. The tournament, played April 18 - 24, 2011 was held at the Club at Savannah Harbor. Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf is the tournament that sparked the creation of the Champions Tour, formerly known as the Senior PGA Tour. The 54-hole, two man team tournament was won this year by Mark McNulty and David Eger. The team won a tidy sum of $460,000 for their efforts. The 33 year old tournament has been held here in Savannah for the last 9 years. Make plans to attend next year's tournament or just come to play a round of golf at this wonderful challenging course.

Afternoon Martini

Yesterday after a long day here at the inn I also had to go to the doctor for my annual physical.
Not one of my favorite pastimes. Afterwards, I had to to the pharmacy for a new prescription. There I stood in line for about 30 minutes only to find I had to wait an additional hour before it would be filled. Not really wanting to walk all the way back home and back again, I decided to treat myself to a glass of wine while I waited. I walked down the street a little ways and ran into Jen's and Friends, a nice little local bar that specializes in Martini's and advertises 100 Martini's and 100 beers. I didn't count to be sure but I think it is close. After perusing the menu, I quickly changed my mind and decided to ditch the wine and have a Martini. Now came the hard part, which on to choose. With names like White Elephant, Scooby Snack, Blueberry Cobbler, Snickers, Reece's, what is a girl to do? Then I saw it, the Savannah Bee Honey Vanilla Martini. Being a big fan of our local Savannah Bee Honey, I had to try this one. One word, "Yummy!" This drink lived up to its name and did not disappoint. I may have found my new favorite martini. What a great way to end a not so nice day. Oh, did I mention, I was there for an hour so I did have to have a second. Whoops! Next time you're in downtown Savannah stop by Jen's and Friends and give this one a try.

Chocolate! Chocolate! Chocolate!

Chocolate Temptations! The name alone was enough to get my attention. Anyone who has stayed with us here at the Zeigler House Inn in Savannah, GA. knows I love chocolate. It's everywhere! Yesterday along with my fellow innkeepers, Diane and Teresa, I attended the 700 Kitchen Cooking School for the first time. Under the direction of Chef Darin Sehnert we made 4 scrumptious chocolate desserts and learned some of the finer points about chocolate.
The desserts were Chocolate-Almond Truffles, Chocolate Fig Bundles, Chocolate Tortes Dressed in Berries and my personal favorite, Chocolate Pots de Creme. Yummy! I have always loved this particular recipe but hadn't make it in a long time. What was I thinking? Wow, I can't wait to make it again. Guess what's for dessert tonight?
Next time you're making plans for your Savannah getaway, you might consider spending a little time with Chef Darin at his wonderful cooking school. Go Back in Time at Colonial Faire and Muster

The Georgia Historical Society is presenting a Colonial Faire and Muster at Wormsloe State Historic Site on Saturday and Sunday, February 5 and 6, 2011 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm both days. The event is free and open to the public.
Visitors can see, hear and experience everyday life during colonial times through activities and demonstrations by on-site interpreters. There will be historical re-enactments, cannon firings, music and dance, and demonstrations of cooking and craft techniques.
As part of the GHS's Georgia History Festival, over 40 museums, historic homes, national forts, state historic sites and other cultural institutions commemorate the founding of Georgia on what is referred to as Super Museum Sunday. The event takes place on Sunday, February 6. Participating museums and historic sites in coastal Georgia and surrounding areas open their doors to the public free of charge from 12 noon to 4:00 pm.
Some of the Museums open here in the Historic District and close by are: Andrew Low House Museum, Isaiah Davenport House Museum, Telfair's Jepson Center for the Arts, Telfair's Owens-Thomas House, Telfair Academy, Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, Ships of the Sea Museum, Harper Fowlkes House, Fort Pulaski, Old Fort Jackson, Tybee Island Light Station and Museum and this is just a few. It's a new year. 2010 has come and gone and we're starting anew with 2011. My goodness where did the time go? With every new year comes the inevitable rush of New Year's resolutions. You know, we all make them. I'm going to eat better, exercise more, lose those extra few pounds, quit procrastinating and wasting time, get all those things done we keep putting off. Sound familiar? Well I've made all of these plus a few more. Last year my resolution was to not make any more resolutions. I guess you now know how that one worked out. Anyway, one of mine was to get serious about this blogging thing. I really don't know much about this social media stuff but everyone keeps preaching to me I need to get with it. So, I promise I will try to do a better job of getting things out to you all.

Veteran's Day 2010

It was just amazing! That's all I can say. Last night was what I hope to be our first annual Free Night Stay for Veterans and Reception. This year following the lead of a B&B in WVa, The Gilliam Inn, we offered a free night stay to any veteran or active duty military personnel for the night of November 10th. Needless to say the offer was a huge success. I filled all 7 rooms the first day within hours. While this was exciting it was also very sad when I had to tell the next 75 or more people that we had no more rooms to give. The Green Palm Inn and Azalea Inn and Gardens were also on board. When we ran out of rooms we appealed to some of our other B&B neighbors and were able to get another 6 rooms from three other inns. In total, we came up with 30 free rooms. We had all planned to do some kind of special reception for our guest at our respective inns when Teresa from Azalea Inn suggested we combine them. From there it was off to the races. We were able to get food donated by some of our favorite restaurants and caterers and of course our favorite wine distributor Lori Mohr graciously donated the wine. Last night and again this morning I heard multiple comments on how wonderful everything was and how much it was appreciated. I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful it was to be able to give something back to these brave men and women and their families. There are not enough words to express the gratitude I and my family feel for what they sacrifice to protect our freedom. For all those that were unable to make it this year, keep a look out for next year because I can't imagine this being a one time event for us. We are hoping next year will be much bigger with more rooms and another great evening for our veterans. In the meantime, any active duty military can always stay with us for a discount. Just let me know when you call to reserve a room.

October Wine Tasting

This past Saturday the 23rd, was our monthly wine tasting. Wow, what a treat. These just keep getting better. This time the focus was on reds. Our theme, "Take me to bed reds". You can draw your own conclusions about the title. We had our largest group yet with 14 people. From the sounds of the conversation both during and after, everyone had a great time.

Lori Mohr was our wine purveyor for the evening and she did a fabulous job presenting the wines. We started the evening off with Molnar Family Poseidon's Pinot Noir from California. It was paired with BBQ salmon prepared with two different sauces, one sweet, one savory, served over a bed of baby greens. The next offering was LaCartuja Priorat from Spain served with a creamy white bean and chorizo soup. Next we were enticed with a lovely Schild Estate Barossa Shirza from Australia. This was paired with another Australian favorite lamb, prepared with a fig chipotle sauce served over sweet potato mash. The next wine was from Washington State, the Velvet Devil Merlot. It was paired with an Italian sausage and mozzarella pizza. We took a bit of a break here and cleansed our palates with a little bubbly and toasted the newlyweds from our inn Paul and Debra. Congratulations! We finished the evening with a sweet Italian I Quaranta Le Rose Brachetto d'Acqui served with a wonderful Framboise mousse drizzled with apricot sauce and fresh raspberries. A sweet end to a perfect evening!

These wine tastings are every third Saturday of the month and are really gaining popularity. Be sure to call and reserve your spot for our next pairing on November 20th when we'll be trying "Holiday Wines"; wines to pair with your holiday dinners. See you there!

Wedding at the Inn

Weddings are always such a happy occasion. This past weekend we hosted a wedding for a lovely couple from Jacksonville. Congratulations Stew & Charla! Fireworks on the River

Here in Savannah, fireworks on the river is a monthly event. Not a big deal to most Savannians. Every first Friday of the month, fireworks are seen high above the Savannah River for all to enjoy. This past Friday, not the first of the month, fireworks rained over the river. To whom did we owe this extravaganza? The 62nd annual convention of the American Pyrotechnics Association would be the answer. I didn't even know they had an association let alone a convention. Anyway, they culminated their visit to Savannah with a world class fireworks display. What a treat! Not your usual fireworks. They were quite grand. Next time you are planning a visit to Savannah, keep the first Friday and Fireworks in mind and a big thanks to those Pyrothechnics. Great job!

September Wine Tasting

Saturday evening was our monthly wine tasting. The event was again, a great success. Lots of good wine, food and conversation. This month's theme was "Red Blends Rule" and rule they did. Not only was there a great selection of wine, they were all very affordable. All, with the exception for the fine Port we had for dessert, would be available retail for under $15! The wines were accompanied by equally accessible and affordable food offerings that included, roasted pork, beef sliders, bbq chicken, mushroom risotto with tri-tip roast and of course dessert, chocolate profiteroles with chocolate cream. Yum, Yum! Needless to say, no one left hungry. The evening was facilitated by Lindsay Melton from United Distributors. She did a fabulous job and was a wealth of information. Thank you Lindsay. This month's tasting was hosted by Jake and Teresa Jacobson owners of Azalea Inn. The tastings are presented jointly by Azalea Inn, Green Palm Inn and, of course, yours truly. We all three pitch in with the cooking and planning to offer a fun, relaxing evening of wine, food and a little education. If you haven't had the chance to try one of these events or have and want to come again, just give us a call to check on the next date. Traditionally, they are held on the third Saturday of the month but they are subject to change depending on schedules. Next month's theme will be "Take Me to Bed Reds" and will be on October 23. Ice Cream or Gelato?

"You scream, we scream, we all scream for ice cream." Well, maybe not. I think from now on it will be Gelato and Water Ice (that's Italian Ice) from Mr. Koolz in downtown Savannah. I can't think of a better way to cool down than with a cup of this delicious cold treat. Best of all, according to the owner Janet, it's less calories and fat than ice cream. Yea, I don't have to totally ditch the diet. The shop is located just a short walk from the house at 101 E. Liberty. This will be a new star on my map for guests. I tried several flavors and settled on coconut. YUM! However, I will be going back this weekend for the flavor Lavender. Janet makes over 200 flavors and she rotates them constantly. She told us about some flavors for the fall, like pumpkin, ginger bread and sweet potato. Sounds like I'll be making quite a few trips in that direction.

Wine and Food Pairing for June

We are excited to announce our first "Wine and Food Pairing Weekend", Saturday June 19, 2010. These themed weekends will be held every third Saturday of the month beginning with this first one in June. The wine pairings are a collaboration of three inns, Zeigler House Inn, Green Palm Inn and Azalea Inn. The events will be held at the Inns on a rotation basis. The first will be at Azalea Inn and Gardens. We think this will be a delightful opportunity to taste some great summer whites and so we have aptly named this gathering ,"Do Blondes Have More Fun?" The evening begins at 5:30 with first wine and food pairing accompanied by our wine expert, Diane Rousakis, who will conduct a lively chat and the wines.

Gospel Jubilee

Yesterday, Sunday April 25th, I took my parents to the historic Savannah Theater for the new Gospel Jubilee. What a treat! The performances at the theater are always great and this one was no exception. The afternoon was filled with uplifting songs both old standards and new. Huxie Scott, a local singer and performer, was amazing. Her singing alone would have been worth the price of admission but the rest of the cast was top notch as well. We sang along and clapped our way through the almost two hours of music. I honestly hated to see it end.

The Gospel Jubilee will be on Sunday's only from 3-5:00 pm now until May 23rd. So if you are going to be in Savannah take time to see this wonderful show or any of the other performances that are available year round. New Savannah Band Shell

Thursday evening the very first concert to be held in the new Savannah Band Shell in Forsyth Park was held. This amazing new venue is sure to be a major asset to all performance held outdoors in the park for years to come. The structure enhanced by colorful lighting and fountains made the concert a real pleasure to watch.

The performers were "Crooked Still", a band that features bluegrass and Celtic music. The music was fabulous. I can't wait for the Jazz Festival in September and Picnic in the Park in October. Concerts in the park have always been a favorite with locals and visitors alike. This new venue will only take the experience to a higher level.

During the day and when concerts have not taken the stage the fountains in front can be used as a wading pool. Next to the Band Shell there is also the new Forsyth Cafe and visitor's center. Be sure to check it out.

Race for the Cure

Early Saturday morning, my son Kris and I walked to Broughton Street to participate in the 2nd annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. In only two years, this new event for Savannah has become the largest race held here in our city. The 1K/5K event wound through the historic district around squares and Forsyth Park, ending at Telfair Square where cheering crowds and much needed refreshments were waiting.

This is a special event for me since I am a 20 years survivor this year. Sadly, this time I ran in memory of a dear friend who lost her more than 6 year battle with breast cancer this past year.
Hopefully, money raised from events like these and other donations will make it possible to find a cure for this horrible disease.

Savannah Jazz Festival

The 2010 Savannah Jazz Festival will be coming September 19-26. All events are free and open to the public. The lineup of artists will be announced later this summer. This event lucidly reflects the strong jazz traditions that Savannah has offered the world for many years. The festival boasts the best of international, national, regional and local jazz talent. Festival goers are always delighted with music from Savannah greats like Ben Tucker and Teddy Adams, either during the formal concert events or the after hours jam sessions.

Be sure to make plans early to assure your reservation for the festival.

Savannah Craft Brewfest

The 2010 Craft Brewfest will be held Labor Day week-end, September 3-4. This outdoor event will be held on the esplanade of the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center overlooking the historic Savannah Riverfront and historic district. The event will feature over 120 craft brews, food, live entertainment and souvenirs.

The week-end begins Friday evening with the Craft Brew and Food Pairing Dinner. The event will feature the taste of great low country cuisine and craft brews chosen to enhance the flavor.

On Saturday the Grand Craft Tasting will feature more that 120 different craft brew and southern cuisine.

Tickets will go on sale beginning in May. Book you room reservations and tickets early! This is not an event to be missed.

Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf and Fine Arts on the River

Hey, all you golf fans, the Senior Tour is coming back to Savannah. For those of you who don't know, I am a real golf fan myself. I have been watching and playing golf most of my life. The Senior Tour is a real treat for me because these are the guys I grew up idolizing.

The 33rd annual Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf will be held from April 19-25 at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa. The tickets are a mere $25. You'll agree a real deal if you've gone to any other PGA Tour event but it gets even better. You can get 2 tickets for the price of one if you show your room key.

Hurry and make your reservations now! This is a great opportunity to see some great golf at a great price!

Also this weekend the Fine Arts on the River will take place. A very select group of local, regional and national artisan will be exhibiting their art. Jazz, blues and Mercer tunes will fill the air all weekend.

Friday night will feature the grand sounds of the AASU Savannah Winds Symphony at 7 pm between the Abercorn and Lincoln Street ramps. The Pops program will include Mercer, Gershwin and the evening will be completed with "Stars and Stripes" and fireworks.

Saturday, you can enjoy the grooves and hilarious moments of Lipbone Herring at 6 pm, followed by classic beach music from nationally acclaimed, "The Showmen". African drum, various performances, dancing and much more round out this weekend event. All events will take place on Rousakis Riverfront Plaza, Historic River Street.

Return from PAII Conference

I just returned from the PAII Conference in Austin, TX. I know, what the heck is PAII? It's the Professional Association of Innkeepers International. Sounds exciting, right? Okay, not so much, but lots of great information and ideas for the inn. That means new and exciting things for you, our guests.
I ordered new Turkish towels, soooo soft, and new robes! I know the current ones are great but believe it or not these will be even better. They'll arrive in June. I've ordered extras in case anyone just has to have one to take home.
Now let's talk tea. Wow, did I ever taste some great tea. I'm not much of a coffee or tea drinker, most of you all know I'm a Diet Coke girl but this tea may have converted me. So, afternoon tea at the Zeigler House is going to be a new addition to our agenda Monday - Thursday. Look for it soon. I also tried some new ports and wines that will be making their way into our wine and cheese line-up on Friday and Saturday evenings.

St. Patty's Day, It's almost here.

How can I be sure if I don't look at the calendar? Maybe it's because the fountain in Forsyth Park is running green or because the sound of bagpipes filling the air is a daily experience now. How cool! Being part Irish I can resist stopping to listen.
If you're here already or on your way for the festivities on Wednesday, when you stop at Forsyth Park to check out the green fountain, be sure to stop by the newly renovated Cafe and Visitor's Center, in the old fort, on the west side of the park. There's also a new amphitheater enhanced by lighted fountains and wading pool. The cafe is open daily and the food is really pretty good. It makes a trip to the park a real delight!

Dedication of Ellis Square

After a 50 plus year absence, Ellis Square is back and better than ever! In November, the new bronze statue of our native son, Johnny Mercer, was dedicated and placed in the square. Finally the rest of the square is ready. Ellis Square is adjacent to City Market filled with shops, restaurants, and art galleries making this a "must see" destination in the Savannah Historic District. City Market and Ellis Square is a short 7-10 minute walk from the Zeigler House Inn.

It's almost time for the 2009 Savannah Jazz Festival. There will be free concerts every evening in Forsyth Park from Thursday, September 24 thru Sunday September 27. We will be offering picnic baskets with either wine and cheese or a full meal. We will also have blankets and chair for you to use. Give us a call and reserve your picnic basket today. New Toys

We have new toys at the inn! I have just purchased two new bicycles built for two. I saw these in the show room and thought, "What fun!". This will be a great way to tour the city and have a good time doing it. You can rent these for a 1/2 day or a full day. Remember the Jazz Festival and Picnic in the Park are coming up in the next few weeks. Order your picnic basket and go in style!
